Catch and Release on Silver Creek

Since 2007 there has been an advisory not to eat fish from Silver Creek because of elevated mercury levels. The levels were reported in error and the advisory has been lifted. Although the lifting of the advisory is good, I don’t advocate the harvest of fish caught in this world renowned trophy trout fishery. Practicing Catch and Release fishing helps to insure fishery’s longevity. Besides that if you practice catch and release, you never reach your limit and can fish all day instead of just a few hours. Hagerman Valley Source of Alligator and Trout for Restaurants

Alligator is a unique meat that is just another product of the Hagerman Valley. The springs and geothermal water in the Hagerman Valley make it ideal for raising a variety of fish also. I’ve seen trout from Buhl, Idaho on menus in our nation’s capital and recently in San Diego. Sometimes we forget about the by-products of this special this valley, that not many areas can boast.
A recent article in the Idaho Statesman about Sweetwater’s Tropic Zone Restaurant talks about their use of Hagerman alligator: “The most fun and unique dish is the alligator chili ($12 lunch and dinner), served with thin-sliced fresh jalapenos, a healthy dollop of sour cream and the option of a fried egg on top. The alligator comes from right here in Idaho – thanks to a geothermal hot spring that gives Hagerman its own tropic zone.” Read more …
